Issue 10: Gloucestershire Cycle Spine

Welcome to the 10th edition of the Gloucestershire Cycle Spinenewsletter.

Gloucestershire Cycle Spine is an ambitious project delivered by Gloucestershire County Council to create a 26-mile cycling and walking corridor across the county. Once completed, it will be the longest new facility of its type in the country. The cycle spine will provide a continuous link between Stroud in the south and Bishop's Cleeve in the north, incorporating both Gloucester and Cheltenham. It will contribute to a significant cycling and walking network across Gloucestershire, improving the quality and connectivity of cycle and walking facilities delivered to date.

A435 Cheltenham to Bishop’s Cleeve cycleway

Work at the Bishop’s Cleeve (GE Aerospace) roundabout has now begun, which includes the installation of new pedestrian and cycle crossings on each of the arms of the roundabout.

Construction of the new cycleway and footway between the Bishop’s Cleeve rRoundabout and the Hyde Lane / Southam Lane junction is ongoing, with drainage and kerbing works currently being carried out and surfacing work progressing.

At the A435 / Hyde Lane / Southam Lane junction, new traffic, pedestrian and cycle crossings have now been installed and are in operation. Once the new footways and cycleways are fully open, both pedestrians and cyclists will be able to travel across the junction using the new push button crossings.

The section between the Hyde Lane / Southam Lane junction and the GWSR Bridge has seen significant progress, with the new footway and cycleway now constructed and surfaced. The new pedestrian crossing adjacent to the garden centre has now been constructed and is operational.

Following successful completion of carriageway and structural works at the GWSR Bridge, the A435 has now re-opened to traffic in both directions. Some surfacing and other works are still required across the bridge, but pedestrian access remains in place.

Alongside the racecourse, the crib supporting wall between the new footway/cycleway and the racecourse has been finished and construction of the new footway and cycleway is in progress.

Construction of the new pedestrian and cyclist crossings at the A435 Evesham Road / Wellington Road junction has been completed and these are now operational for people to use. The cycleway alongside the A435 Evesham Road is now open for use, with the remaining green surfacing and lining work to be completed shortly.

Please note that during the rest of the construction works into early 2026, lane closures with two-way lights will be required for periods along the route to enable safe completion of works. Overnight road closures may also be required. Details of upcoming traffic management will be communicated via the scheme webpage linked below and via Gloucestershire County Council social media channels. On-site signage will also be used when required.

Further details of the construction works and FAQs and responses can be found on the construction information and road closures section of the scheme webpage: Construction information and road closures | Highways

Progress and key milestones

We’re delighted to announce that works at the junction are now complete, and commissioning was successfully carried out on time. The new junction is operating well and includes an innovative bus pull-in area, which runs under its own dedicated traffic signal phase. Extensive pre-commissioning checks ensured everything functioned as designed on the big day.

Additional progress in the area:

  • Final section of footway surfacing completed.

  • Road markings and surface colouring applied to the segregated cycle track and footway.

Snagging and adjustments:

A small number of snagging items were identified, including manhole covers that required resetting. These were addressed promptly while keeping the permanent traffic signals operational, minimizing disruption for road users. More information about the scheme can be found here: B4063 Gloucester to Cheltenham Cycle Improvements Scheme | Highways

Cycle Spine - Gloucester City Centre

Northgate Street

We’re pleased to share that works within the Northgate area are progressing well, with much of the construction now complete and traffic management removed from the network.

Recent milestones achieved:

  • Completion of paving works and installation of a new zebra crossing and raised tables at Worcester Street.

  • Imprinted tarmac added to planter areas at the junctions of Worcester Street/Northgate and St Aldate Street.

  • New crossing points along Northgate Street, featuring tactile paving to improve accessibility.

  • Additional York Stone paving in front of St John’s Church, currently ongoing in a small work area. This reflects our commitment to preserving Gloucester City Centre’s heritage while enhancing accessibility for those walking, wheeling, and cycling.

Seasonal challenges:

As winter sets in, colder temperatures can impact final works such as road markings and surface finishes. If you notice areas that appear incomplete, rest assured we’re working closely with our contractor to overcome these seasonal challenges.

Thank you for your patience and support as we continue to deliver improvements that make Gloucester City Centre safer, more accessible, and more welcoming.

Southgate Street

We’re delighted to report that works in the Southgate area are now largely complete. Key improvements include:

  • Kimbrose Triangle Crossing – now open and ready for use.

  • Continuous Entrance to Moorings Car Park – providing smoother access for all users.

  •  Segregated cycle track and footway along Southgate Street

  • Placement of tactile paving at road edge around Kimbrose Triangle area.

What’s left to do?

A few finishing touches remain, including:

  • Road markings and surface finishes on the cycleway.

  • Installation of some vertical signage.

Addressing challenges:

A minor drainage issue at the Kimbrose Triangle cycle crossing was quickly addressed by our design team, council officers and the contractor. We’re confident this solution will improve conditions.

At the Tall Ships pub crossing, installing new lighting proved challenging due to the high volume of underground utilities. Despite our best efforts, this crossing could not be completed before pre-arranged unrelated utility works began.

To minimise disruption, temporary traffic management will be in place while we develop a new design to overcome these utility constraints. We apologise for any inconvenience and appreciate your understanding as we work toward the best long-term solution.
