Club Centenary “Gravel” (and CX and MTB) Weekend, New Forest, May 2022

Friday 6th May – Sunday 8th May 2022

Mark Chick is a new (returning) club member after 20 years away. He thought it would be a good way to meet more of you if he put his hand up to organise an event as part of the centenary, even if a little delayed by the strange times we’re living through.

It’ll be a weekend away to the New Forest, exploring the excellent off-road “gravel” trails the area has to offer, perfect for cyclocross, gravel and mountain bikes. The miles of trails promise some excellent riding. Here’s the plan.
• Friday 6th May 2022: travel to the New Forest to arrive anytime you like from mid-afternoon onwards. Spend two nights on a bed and breakfast basis at the YHA New Forest in Burley. Option to have an evening ride for those that want to, and/or just relax in the hostel or start enjoying the pubs in Burley.
• Saturday 7th May: ride the New Forest trails. He’s going to plan a ride that heads south through the forest to Lymington on the coast, taking the ferry over to the Isle of Wight for an extra loop where he’s told the riding is excellent, before returning on the ferry to the mainland and back to Burley. All can ride together or split up, and there will be other route options to cater for other appetites (with GPS files).
• Sunday 8th May: another ride, using the route of what was probably one of the first gravel sportives, the Falling Leaves (approx. 60 km). Alternative routes will also be available (with GPS files). Finish the ride back at the hostel (excellent café nearby) before heading home.
YHA New Forest website:
We’ll be staying in private rooms for our party at the hostel, some with ensuite. Separate female and male rooms. The hostel has bike storage (own lock also required).
Price is £86 per person, covering the accommodation, including breakfast. Travel and all other meals are not included.
Burley is blessed with some nice pubs and excellent cafes. The rides should give us the opportunity to check out some of the others in the area. Packed lunches and limited evening meals are available at the hostel (pizzas and rather good nachos). There is also a small bar, coffee etc.
Mark has reserved enough space for up to 19 of us, in four, five and six bedded rooms.
To book a place, he needs a deposit of £30 per person by 30th April at the very latest. This enables him to cover the deposit he needs to pay to the hostel. He appreciate it’s a long way off, but after the last year he’s hoping people will jump at the chance to have something else to look forward to.
Sorry, but no under 16s as at the date of the trip.
Email Mark at if you want to book a place or have any questions.
